1955 to 1984 BMW R - Airhead Bevel drive Splines

Bruno's replacement splines for the BMW Bevel drive Ring gear are made from Heat treatable carbon steel and case hardened (47-52RWc) for greater impact strength which provide longer life and less wear than the OEM part. This method of rebuilding a BMW spline has the advantage over traditional rebuilds using Nickel based Alloys because the case hardened Tooth contact surface is nearly indestructible from impact.

It is recommended to replace the spline dog in the wheel at the same time to have both spline surfaces mate properly to avoid premature wear and drive line lash.

Current rebuildable models:

1955-1969 BMW R 50-R69 models

1970-1984 all Twin shock (double sided swing arm) BMW R50, R60, R65, R75, R80, R90, R100 models

Due the high mileage of most BMW motorcycles, Bevel drive splines wear over time and will need to be rebuilt (especially the ones which haven't seen any spline grease). This picture shows a 1974 BMW R60/6 49K mi Bevel drive which was not lubed properly between Tire change and wore down the spline. If yours looks like this, consider a rebuild to eliminate driveline lash and an eventual break down.
This is what a rebuilt Bevel drive spline looks like, Bruno's recommends moly based grease for lubrication.
This picture shows a new spline after final machining.
This picture shows a new spline with a new wheel spline dog slid over it to check for clearance before assembly.
